Mastering Piano as Adult Learner: Tips for Success and Inspiration

  1. When you are learning piano as adult please remember: it took you about 20 years in your filed to become good and to feel accomplished, so do not expect fast results in piano lessons. Goals as one week, one month, whatever fast results they promise online are not reasonable expectation. Remember learning is a process and takes time and dedication. Compare to learning language, dancing, or sports.
  2. Focus on enjoyment than on goals for fast learning. Every movement, every good sound, small melody or song you learn is already achievement. You could not do it the week before.
  3. Create a routine for practicing (same as gym, going to class, or to work). To see success you need consistency, it comes with routine of practice.
  4. When practicing your music forget about everything else. Escape in the land of sounds. It is refreshing for the mind but also helps you learn faster. Focus is essential here.
  5. If you have already some skills, try not to overestimate them. The biggest problem of most adult learners is that they pick too difficult repertoire that does not match their real skills and available time for practice. This leads to defeat and demoralization, loose of interest and eventually quitting the piano.
  6. Enjoy the great piano performers, but please do not compare to them. They spend life time mastering their art daily. You will need the same time to get as good as them. However, less advanced skills, but polished, will bring you pleasure, success with your friends, and feeling of satisfaction.
  7. Do not copy multiple “lessons” online, not all of them are correct or good for you. Get a teacher with understanding of how to leach piano technique, and who will work to bring your best out.
  8. There is not good or bad repertoire, there is only one which is not consistent with your current level. Carefully selected music is half of your success as piano performer.
  9. Stretch your interests and try different genres also. The variety boosts your passion for practicing, but also boosts your skills and imagination.
  10. Remember; piano is there for you in situations when no one else is. It is your artistic side; it is part of you.
  11. Sometimes life gets in the way. Don’t beat up yourself for missed practice, for shorter practice routines. Just keep going. Remember, this is a process and it is more like a marathon. Success comes with the long marathon run, not from the sprint.
